Smart maritime technology cluster

Oxford Research helps City of Helsinki to develop its smart maritime technology cluster

City of Helsinki has initiated a project, which aims to create new business to meet international and national demand by combining Finnish maritime technology knowhow with information technology expertise. Oxford Research has been commissioned by City of Helsinki to study markets, companies and capabilities to support the project's activities and to develop an action plan to build the smart maritime technology cluster.

Great growth potential

Finland is world-famous for its information technology expertise, but the country is also home to global maritime technology market leaders from shipbuilding to artic technology. Combining these two fields offers great growth potential: "Only recently have we started to see the opportunities in using IT, control systems, advanced planning techniques and the Internet of Things in maritime industries", says Ulla Tapaninen who is the project manager of the smart maritime technology project at City of Helsinki.

The maritime technology industry in Finland has a turnover of more than 5 billion euros, which is more than double the size of the digital gaming industry. "The aim of the project is to help the Finnish smart maritime technology cluster to find its markets. We want the cluster to be as well-known brand as the Finnish mobile or digital gaming industry", Tapaninen continues.

The study which maps the smart maritime technology business begins in January 2015. The results of the study will be presented in the cluster kickoff seminar in April 2015.

The "Merit" project is part of the maritime technology development programme funded by the Ministry of Employment and the Industry that runs in 2014-2016. The programme consist of ten projects that support the competitiveness of the maritime technology industry.
